Being and Nothingness edition by JeanPaul Sartre Sarah Richmond Politics Social Sciences eBooks Reviews

  • Had to buy a thirty dollar plus book to tell me what this book said. Still trying to find out.
  • It’s a little difficult to know how to review a epochal work like Being and Nothingness. Instead of summarizing the material, a herculean task given its eight hundred pages, I’ll simply provide what to expect and briefly share my opinions on his methods to help decide if this is worth your reading.

As I understand him, Sartre is above all a phenomenologist. Engaging with the tradition of Hegel, Husserl and Heidegger most of the text is devoted to descriptions of how Sartre experienced his humanity. Assertions abound and new and complex terminology is developed, all around a new account of human consciousness and the world.

Sartre reminds you how little philosophy has changed since Aristotle. In the Metaphysics Aristotle summarized his predecessors and laid down a sweeping account of the cosmos all based on his reflections on language, custom and personal experience.

In the hands of a great thinker like Sartre a similar technique does result in some brilliant insights. Moreover, he is undoubtedly one of the primary sources of post-modernism. However, there is also a hard to understand lack of attention to germane material outside of philosophy.

For example, there is a one hundred page description of time without any consideration of the unity of space and time in special relativity. While the human experience of temporality is finely illuminated is it too much to ask that it be informed by other disciplines?

These oversights leads you to think that in an age making such strides towards understanding the physiology of consciousness, Sartre’s phenomenological approach seems rather dated and unnecessary. Those partial to this type of philosophizing may, however, disagree.

Obviously you are in the presence of a great mind but will and should this way of almost solipsistic reasoning about the world endure? It seems to grow increasingly passé as the scientific outlook on humanity advances. In my opinion, for all its genius, Being and Consciousness is more of a relic than a living philosophical text. I wish I had not devoted the time to read it but, again, others will certainly differ.
  • Jean-Paul Sartre's "Being and Nothingness" is the fundamental text of Existentialism. His examination of ontology constantly reviews previous existential philosophy by building on, and refuting, the work of prior philosophers.

Sartre begins with a framework on nothingness and negations. Nothingness does not have being but is supported by being. It comes into existence through the for-itself and allows consciousness to exist. Negations are acts which contain negativity as part of their structure (ex absence.) He then progresses to an examination of Bad Faith. This is essentially a false consciousness which a person pursues to flee from their own freedom.

The most theoretically important part of the book regarding ontology is Sartre's explanation of Being-for-itself and Being-for-others. Being-for-itself is an examination of the works of Descartes, Husserl, etc, into the nature of the individuals being and consciousness. "The Other" is a concept from Hegel that Sartre alters to explain others around us. For Sartre "The Other" is in a constant battle to deprive the other person of their freedom without extinguishing their being.

The second half of his treatise deals with issues mostly empirical in nature. Sartre has an impeccable knowledge of philosophy and the physical science up to 1943 (philosophy, biology, psychology, pyschics, etc..) He uses the theory of ontology to reexamine empirical issues where he finds scientific fields lacking. In the end Sartre devises a `Existential Psychoanalysis' (Existentialism) to examine psychological phenomenon through an ontological lens.

For Sartre humans are thrown into the world, in a situation, but have absolute freedom over choice. They are responsible for their choice. Whether they chose to actively pursue something or passively submit THEY ARE RESPONSIBLE. This responsibility is not meant as an ethical judgment but rather a statement of fact.

Sartre almost completely eschews ethical judgments in "Being and Nothingness." His objective throughout the work is to explain the ontological foundation of being. He reserves 2 pages at the end of the book discussing ethics. His advice is to strive for a synthesis of the being-in-itself with the being-for-itself (a true single consciousness between body and mind.) A person can then strive to attain their values (which are subjective in nature.)

Note Sartre assumes his readers have read essentially every existential philosopher since Plato. He gives brief descriptions of each philosopher's theory but I strongly recommend you read their work before "Being and Nothingness." Sartre also uses incredibly obtuse language (which is made worse through translation.) While not as bad as other philosophers his work forces the person to actively read everything he says. Sartre commands an excellent understanding of science but actively rejects some of its most basic premises because science fails to ask the right questions. While some of the science he talks about has long been disproven for the most part his understanding of science remains valid.

Note #2 I read the Gramercy edition.

I strongly recommend "Being and Nothingness" to anyone interested in ontology with a strong background in philosophy and the psychical sciences.
  • I had a major breakthrough with Being and Nothingness, open my head.
It took me a while before it sunk into my head, then pow saw how free i can be when i tap into nothingness which in turn is everything. Without the identity and bondage of body rather the freedom of being in- itself for the itself.
    Live for life itself!
  • Wow!
  • Depressing. #mustread
  • A classic for those interested in Existentialism or any form of contemplation about the reality of being.. Some may criticize that Jean-Paul is Atheistic, however, alot of groundwork for theism is laid by those whom do not believe. Good text!
  • This is the book where Sartre gives his first and most thorough explanations of Bad Faith, as well as overtly explains his ontology. If I had to recommend one book to understand the philosophy of Sartre, I would recommend this one. It is where we see Sartre's blueprint to the categorization of his world, and I think it is very beautiful.

  • This is the most beautiful cookbook I've ever purchased. Really.

The recipes look great. A few are basic but are great reminders of simpler dishes (not everything has to be super complicated) but I can't wait to try even those.

It is a impressive spattering of different cuisines. As a Texas, I'm impressed with the ceviche and his other Mexican recipes. The recipe.for slaw is one that I can finally get excited about. The lamb looks like the one I made at Easter - but better.

I just hope this guy stays with cookbooks for a while. Please don't parlay this into a brand until you publish some more of these.
  • Beautiful book, full of gorgeous photography and wonderful recipes! Would make the perfect gift.
  • Saw David and this book on the Today Show today. Everything looks so good and can't wait to start making some of the recipes!!!!!!!!!
  • The print of this book is no good ☹️
  • Can’t wait to have a party!
  • LOVE, LOVE, LOVE!!!!! The book is beautiful!!! Bright and inviting!!!
  • This is an amazing book !!

The Last Volunteer The Doomsayer Journeys Book 1 Audible Audio Edition Steve Wetherell C C Hogan Falstaff Books Books Reviews

  • The only novel I've actually read rather than listened to on Audible in over a decade. I was far too amused my Steve Wetherell's antics on Authors and Dragons and his first audiobook "Shoot the Dead" not to take the time to go ahead and read The Last Volunteer.
  • This my kind of humor. I’m reminded of Christopher Moore and Red Dwarf. I love the way the story bounces back and forth from past to present, from superman, Handen Strike to, well, not so super, Bip, who, despite his super deficiency, surprisingly lands on his feet.

My first exposure to Wetherell was on Authors and Dragons. Yeah, every one of the authors would giggle at the word "exposure." *sigh* Funny group, so not surprised that this book was a hoot.
  • Well written, with a different view of a hero...or two. crossing both fantasy and science fiction, in a mixed up world. A who's who of myths an legends. Great conversation between characters. I like it!
  • Steve Wetherell presents an excellent yarn for the Comedic Science Fiction genre, a genre woefully underrepresented in the fictional field, except for a few standouts like Isaac Asimov's short stories filled with puns and, the giant whale in the field, Douglas Adams Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

The story satires gaming (both computer games and roleplaying), politics, criminal activity, education, the job market, weather, travel, and anything else which strikes Wetherell's fancy, while providing laugh-out-loud descriptions of people and places. Following our heroic hero Bip, and an anti-hero adventuring alien Hostility Advisor Haden, and a semi-sentient Massive Ball of Death, and the truly-sentient Answer to Everything, the Universal Theory, or just Ted to friends, and the rest of the erratic group of point-of-view characters, creates a kaleidoscope of improbabilities that become probable in their collective existence.

As an editing note I am impressed with Wetherell's ability to blend three (or more) different timelines into a coherent narrative, using each of the POV characters to reveal more of the world/universe, develop characters, and drive the plot forward. All the while being funny.
  • I gave this novel five stars. Why? If my wife has to ask me to stop reading because my laughing is disturbing her Candy Crush game. That's a good indication your book should earn five stars. THE LAST VOLUNTEER made me laugh, and kept me laughing.

THE LAST VOLUNTEER is about reluctant heroes setting forth with one set of expectations, and stumbling into wildly unexpected outcomes. And that's pretty much what happens to the reader, too. Our hero, Bip, is a lovable loser trying to find what he's good at. We follow Bip's epic journey of self-discovery, which includes trying not to get eaten or setting himself on fire. At the end of this soul-wrenching journey, Bip has a startling insight...he really isn't good at anything. Not that any of that matters, he still has to save the world.

The novel opened with a spaceship in distress, and I felt sure I had landed squarely in a sci-fi spoof. But Wetherell kept changing the rules on me. He wasn’t playing fair and staying in his genre box. In Volunteer, he takes a dash of science fiction, mashes it together with some fantasy tropes (which he mercilessly, and delightfully, abuses), and then mixes it together with designer jeans and some dryly hilarious British humor. His style echoes faintly of Douglas Adams, and will appeal to any Hitchhiker's or Python fan. However, Wetherell's voice and delivery are unique. I lived and breathed this kind of humor in my high school and college days, which brings me to my next point.

If, by chance, your girlfriend laughs while reading this book, marry her.

Don't pick up The Last Volunteer with any preconceived notions and don't try to guess where it’s going. You'll just fail. Simply find a nice, quiet place to read it (preferably far away from any Candy Crush activity) and go along for the ride. Along the way, watch out for the krakens, don't talk to the sea gulls, read the hieroglyphs before you drink, and, please, be nice to the harpies.
  • I asked my husband how I could describe an author who is part "Douglas Adams, Robert Rankin, and part Jabberwocky. He looked me dead in the eye and said "Everybody who reads science fiction or fantasy that is even remotely funny compares the author to Douglas Adams". So there.

He completely ignored my comparisons to Robert Rankin and Jabberwocky. I should have mentioned A Lee Martinez, but was afraid the sentence was too long. Steve Wetherell writes good science fiction/fantasy comedy. Does that work?

I think my hubby is afraid of the Jabberwocky. And why is my biggest mirror suddenly cracking with cats hissing? Back into the Mirror, Jabberwocky, and unhand my beautiful calico.

That's better. Here is some turkey you can eat. What do you mean, you have gone vegan? I want the cat's fur on the outside, please. Much better. See how kitty purrs when you do not harm her? Go ahead and eat my sunflowers. Then attack anyone who downvotes this review.

Anyhow, sample lines from the book

"It is called the Universal Theory, and once you get to know it, it is far friendlier than you might imagine. It prefers to be called Ted..."

"Since the beginning of the planet's history, there had been an ever-increasing love of war. Nations had never been more content than when bombing the living hell out of other nations. Oodles of political time and money went inmto merely looking for excuses to have a war. War was good. Everyone knew where they stood with war. Even if it was usually in a bomb shelter."

The series is addictive, and I found myself having to purchase the rest of the trilogy. Highly recommend giving this author a chance.

*Note I was lucky enough to get a copy of this book as an ARC. However, I do my best to be honest, which may explain the Jabberwocky I just stuffed back in the mirror.

"The ideas Brad Gilbert shares on how to improve the mental side of the game are both practical and challenging. The approach Brad recommends sound simple but require deep concentration and analytical thinking. Fortunately Brad has done much of the analysis to help in various real world situations. Our task is to assess the situation, and then execute these tactics effectively. That is much harder to do than say, of course. The entertaining real world stories and examples, while slightly dates, are timeless."

Winning Ugly Mental Warfare in TennisLessons from a Master eBook Brad Gilbert Steve Jamison Reviews

  • Loved it! Brad Gilbert have a really analytic way of looking at tennis, which make it easy to implement his strategies. His mantra is "always observe and analyse". Some of the quotes that helped me with my game was these

"Develop your powers of observation and analyse and then use the information, and your chances of winning will go up by 20 percent or more."

"The Game Plan This process of review will lead me right into the equally important process of planning my strategy; 1. What do I want to make happen? 2. What do I want to prevent from happening?"

"Most recreational players watch a match like they're looking at somebody play Nintendo at a video arcade. They just stare. I'd watch a match like I was studying for a history test."

About John McEnroe "He was a very smart and observant tennis player. He was always aware of the dynamics of the match and was looking for ways to exploit your weaknesses."
  • I originally bought this books a few years back. I had mentioned it to my friend at time who said it was a waste of time to read it and I should just play my own game. Mind you this is the same guy that beats me evertime we play. Well I decided to purchase the kindle and audio version a few weeks back. I must say, I should have read this book years ago. I never really took into account the mental part of the game. I was a grinder and just pounded away on the courts and hope I would win. I now look at my opponents in a whole different light now. I play the mental game more than the physical. I now keep a notebook and make notes on my opponants. This book is must read. The irony of all this is that opponent that told me not to read the book was playing the mental game. Turns out he had read it and did not want me to get any advantage from reading the book. Let's just say after reading the book I have beat him on a number of occasions now.
  • Awesome strategies for weekend recreational players like myself. Mandatory classic reading for all levels of tennis players to not only work on the physical aspects of your game but also the mental aspect to win your matches. I know I’ll never win Wimbledon but this book’s mental outlook, preparation and tactics helped me win my local tennis club’s 4.0 mens league. I have to thank a player like Brad who unfortunately didn’t have the talent to win grand slams and be a super star but had the mental toughness to outthink his opponents to the tune of 5 million some dollars won on the professional atp tour. Brad is a true master guru and coach. Let him coach you to improve your tactical game.

  • Really good book about strategy and mental preparation not only for tennis but also for other single-player sports like racquetball, squash, golf, etc. I highly recommend it for players who are really interested in improving his/her game. My unique negative feeling is related to the fact that the first edition of the book was written about 1992 and all examples and comments are with players like McEnroe, Lendl, Becker, Sampras, Agassi (all of them are of course legends of the sport) but for readers of the 21th century examples discussing the strategies and styles used by Federer, Nadal, Djokovic, etc. would be more attractive. Any way, the basic principles still remain the same.
  • I just finished reading the books and have already started applying the lessons to my play...and it is working. Gilbert covers multiple aspects of the game from how to prepare for competition before you're even near a court to how to pack your bag to how to handle multiple situations while playing and maximize your strengths and capitalize on their weaknesses. I especially enjoyed the tips on how to change up the game when you are behind, keep focused under distraction, and deal with hookers, turtles, and pushers. I am currently a 3.0 tennis player so have allot learn from a club pro, but even so, his advice has already improved my play. In particular, I am better now at return of serve, lobs, and remembering to "get the ball earlier."
The book was generally fun to read, well-written, and worth the time if you're looking to improve your game. I could see how his advice could be extremely valuable for a high level player or young person with allot of talent but not allot of strategy. I played racquetball for many years and this advice could have helped out allot!!!!! Finally, I loved the advice for the over 35 player and am remembering profilactic ibuprofen and Tiger Balm.

Dungeons Dragons Spellbook Cards Magic Items DD Accessory Gale Force Nine 9780786966707 Books Reviews

  • These are high-quality, durable laminated cards, and explain each magic item clearly so you don't have to refer to the Dungeon Master's Guide or print out your own cards on paper.

My only complaint is the variety of pictures. Most of the items have a picture of the item on the back of each card. However, since not every magic item in the DMG has a picture, they had to come up with some "miscellaneous" or placeholder pictures for some of them. Although this is unavoidable, I wish they would've been a bit more consistent with their depictions. For example, one of the robe items shows a picture of a suit of armor on the back. Although the cloak of protection, for example, has a unique picture all its own, I would have rather they had put its picture on the robe's card so that it at least looked like a robe. Many of the others just show a miscellaneous picture of a book with a wand and gems on it when they could've just duplicated one of the other wands, or books, or whatever the specific item was.

Like I said, most of the items have a picture depicted perfectly, but it just seems lame that some of the items are just seen as less important than the other items because they just have a throwaway picture associated with them.
  • The good, is that these are useful cards describing the magic items gettin the DMG using the official art from that book.

The bad, these cards depict ONLY the art in the DMG and nothing else. I was disappointed to find that items without existing art were given a generic image.
So all the potions look the same, and many other items share the same image as one another. There should have been some mention of this.

Oh and the tuck box fell apart in shipping.

Fortunately there are other products that are already available that provide cards with unique art for each item. I will be combining those cards with these to have q more complete collection.
  • It is complete bullpoo that they are selling these cards without a unique picture for each item.
  • I enjoy the fact that they have art on the back of the cards alot infact new and not found in the magic item sections of the DM guide I gave them 3🌟 for that, the only reason I'm not giving 4 or 5 is because they cheap out on some of the magic items some armors they show their cool designs while others they use a generic shield and armor, and use that design to show a shield, for the ion stones they use the same generic ionstone cluster accross the board, and there are a few that made me think... Wow now your just being lazy for instance there are these magic gloves that the image is just of a time, a scroll, a wand, and some gems... I'm like... Really? Especially when they say on the package "with game statistics on one side and Evocative art on the other" it's not Evocative if your using the same image over and over... At least put a similar object described on the back, it's not like you don't have some magic glove design, because you do...
  • Nearly a quarter of these have generic, often nonsensical artwork. Five editions and hundreds of books to draw art from, they used placeholders for any art not in the 5e DMG. Except the Deck of Many Things, which has awesome art in the DMG but isn’t included. This product is a real disappointment.
  • I was bummed at first when some of the cards had generic images, however I realized shortly that the reason was that the items are not pictured in the DMG so they had nothing to go on. The cards are sturdy and easy to read and quite handy! I highly recommend it for DM's to hand out to players so they are not constantly looking the item up in the DMG or taking up tons of space on their character sheet for the items info.
  • I was very excited to get this, but that quickly became disappointment. For a company that hires as many artists as a comic publisher like Marvel, they really phoned it in with these cards. There are over 50 cards that the art is the same. Sword of Vengeance has same stock art as Weapon +1. Robe of Scintillating colors is a picture of armor (same as Ethereal Armor). Only one or two potions and oils are original art, while every other is stock picture of a satchel of potions. Even rings of elemental control are the same picture for every element. I am so disappointed in WOTC. So little effort was put into this product
  • These are cool for people who like tangible items on the table. I wish they had put more effort into the art, but otherwise they do the job. I wouldn't get these if you are looking for cool or unique gaming accessories, there are probably much better options for less money, but they are better than nothing for those who want a representation of (most of) the item.
