Holy Lands A Novel Audible Audio Edition Amanda Sthers Jess Einstein Suzanne Toren Emily Lawrence Josh Bloomberg Peter Berkrot Audible Studios for Bloomsbury Books Reviews

  • I love this book!!!! It’s like Jane Austen meets 84 Charing Cross RD. Meets Israel.
I fell in love with the book from page one. Read it in one sitting! Could NOT put it down. Perfect size. Highly quality paper. And easy to read font. The story itself is ...perfection. It’s simply beautiful.
  • This is counterintuitively very enjoyable while tackling a deadly subject. I didn’t expect the style of using letters to drag, but it really didn’t. The treatment of the Israeli Palestinian conflict is one of the best I have read
  • Holy Lands is simply delightful. The messages of forgiveness and reconciliation are powerful, and the characters get there in the most delightful ways.
  • The dialogue around raising pigs in Israel is quite humorous. The interplay between all of the characters reveals some of life’s most difficult feelings to express.
  • Story moves fast, however a lot of character development left implicit. Interesting read but wish it delved more into the intricacies of the holy Land
  • I started laughing and slowly one page after another I started crying.... The type of tears that make you want to call all your friends and your entire family to tell them YOU HAVE TO READ THIS BOOK!
  • I'm not sure what readers French author Amanda Sthers was writing for in her novel, "Holy Lands". The book, which is being made into a movie, is a curious mixture of classic family dysfunction mixed with pork, used here as a seasoning. "Holy Lands" is set in both Nazereth, Israel (which is one of the few places in Israel where pigs can be raised), New York City, and. variously, Marrakesh and Paris. The characters flit between the cities with very little intention of acting as a family. Everyone's mad or disappointed with most everyone else and they find it easier to communicate by mail - either snail mail or, in some cases, email.

There aren't very many epistolary novels being written lately. The best I can think of is British author Nigel Williams' sly and glorious novel, "Unfaithfully Yours", whose letters between characters are laugh-out-loud funny. Williams was able to concoct a fairly plausible plot point for why the letters were being written; Amanda Sthers' reasons for the letters is that Dr Harry Rosenmerck has moved to Israel to raise pigs and doesn't want a phone or a computer with email connection. And this inability to communicate in modern terms is devastating for the Rosenmerck family, which consists of divorced parents and two adult children. The children are almost caricatures of today's dysfunctional family members. David is gay and brilliant, but has problems communicating with his father who has practically disowned him. And Annabelle is the 30 year old "child", who goes through life, unable - or unwilling - to settle down and begin to embrace adulthood. These are characters seen in almost every book about dysfunctional families. The parents are divorced, which is, of course, the reason for their children's problems. (But being the child of a father-who-has-a-pig-farm-in-Israel can't be too helpful to family dynamics...)

Okay, so Amanda Sthers book - which is quite short - is another book about a dysfunctional family with a failure to communicate. The plot has been a staple of literature since, like, forever, and has been done better before now. I can sort of recommend the book if you have some free time to begin to get involved with the Rosenmercks. Though, I'd really advise your picking up "Unfaithfully Yours" if you want to read an epistolary novel about dysfunctional people.
  • “Does keeping the memory fresh prevent history from repeating itself? Surely not. Memories are meant to be forgotten. History is meant to be repeated. That of Jews, of women, of Arabs, of people who suffer, of Little Red Riding Hood. And the grandmother always, always has sharp teeth.”

Seldom do I make a decision to read a galley based almost entirely on the book’s cover, but really. A dancing pig in the Holy Land? How can that story not be interesting? Big thanks go to Net Galley and Bloomsbury.

The whole book is a series of letters and emails sent between five characters. We have four family members Harry and Monique are divorced, yet it’s one of those complicated divorces where there’s no clean break; David and Annabelle are their adult children. Harry is an American expatriate who has moved to Israel, but instead of embracing his culture and homeland in a more conventional way, he has opted to become a pig farmer in Nazareth, one of the few places in this Jewish nation where the animals are not straight up illegal. And so the fifth character is the rabbi, who entreats Harry to give up the pork business. He’s upsetting people, and he should respect his roots a little more. Jews have been through enough, nu? And before we know it, there’s mention of the Holocaust.

Harry wants to keep his pigs, and he thinks it is time for Jews to lighten up about the Holocaust, maybe tell a joke about it now and then. The rabbi is floored. Joke? About the Holocaust? And so it’s on.

You would think that with such edgy subject matter the story would veer over the boundary of good taste, but Sthers—who has many bestsellers to her credit, though this is her American debut—is deft, insightful and very, very funny. The prose is angry, hilarious, and aching all in turns, not unlike our feelings for our kin.

Families are such fertile territory, and this one is among the best fictional families in literature. David, Harry and Monique’s son, is a gay playwright whose father has not come to grips with David’s sexuality. David writes him endless letters; Harry won’t respond. We see how Harry thinks and feels about David through his correspondence with the rabbi, and with the things Annabelle learns when she comes for a visit. Meanwhile, David’s new play is about to open, and it’s titled “Kosher Pig.” It’s about his father. Oh, how he wants Harry to be there for the opening! But Harry remains incommunicado.

This is a slender little book, just 176 pages, and so I expected a casual romp, but it’s more than that. It’s a quick read, not because it’s lightweight literature but because it’s impossible to put down. I recommend you should get it and read it, and then…maybe you should call your parents. Better yet, go visit them.

A GUARDIAN, OBSERVER, PITCHFORK, NPR, METRO AND HERALD SCOTLAND BEST MUSIC BOOK OF 2018

‘The definitive grime biography’ NME

’A landmark genre history’ Pitchfork

The year 2000. As Britain celebrates the new millennium, something is stirring in the crumbling council estates of inner-city London. Making beats on stolen software, spitting lyrics on tower block rooftops and beaming out signals from pirate-radio aerials, a group of teenagers raised on UK garage, American hip-hop and Jamaican reggae stumble upon a dazzling new genre.

Against all odds, these young MCs will grow up to become some of the UK’s most famous musicians, scoring number one records and dominating British pop culture for years to come. Hip-hop royalty will fawn over them, billion dollar brands will queue up to beg for their endorsements and through their determined DIY ethics they’ll turn the music industry's logic on its head.

But getting there won’t be easy. Successive governments will attempt to control their music, their behaviour and even their clothes. The media will demonise them and the police will shut down their clubs. National radio stations and live music venues will ban them. There will be riots, fighting in the streets, even murder. And the inner-city landscape that shaped them will be changed beyond all recognition.

Drawn from over a decade of in depth interviews and research with all the key MCs, DJs and industry players, in this extraordinary book the UK’s best grime journalist Dan Hancox tells the remarkable story of how a group of outsiders went on to create a genre that has become a British institution. Here, for the first time, is the full story of grime.

"Just like how grime suffered unfair genre distinctions, this book belongs in neither music nor sociological categories. Hancox delivers a stunning chronicling of a music scene born out of adversity, that refused to be shutdown by all the pressures of late capitalism and aggressive neoliberal myths. Out of that struggle grime was forged as a distinct musical ethos, whose collective strength proves it much more than beats and bars. Powerful writing."

The Tiny Mess Recipes and Stories from Small Kitchens eBook Maddie Gordon Mary Gonzalez Trevor Gordon Reviews

  • Hi, I usually don’t take the time to comment but this is an incredible book and I am happy to be the first to comment. I have a tiny kitchen and it’s a MESS so the title intrigued me! When the book arrived I skimmed through the recipes and some sounded so good and easy to follow. I can’t wait to try them all. The unexpected part was great photos of the food and the tiny kitchens and of the people and their unique livings spaces. I am enjoying the short stories of the people, it seems they are happy to downsize their living space to enrich other parts of their lives. They are out of the rat race, good for them! 5 stars to all! - KM
  • Inspiring stories & recipes! Beautiful enough to chill on your coffee table, on your kitchen shelves, or anywhere. I felt compelled to review when I came home and my dog had chewed the back cover of mine, and I felt a deep sadness.

Hashimoto Food Pharmacology Nutrition Protocols and Healing Recipes to Take Charge of Your Thyroid Health edition by Izabella Wentz Professional Technical eBooks Reviews

  • I preorderd this book and got it delivered on its release date because I had such high hopes for it. I wanted to love it. But honestly, I'm not sure it will work for the average, working person/family. To follow the specific meal plans, you will need to set aside a significant portion of your day to cook. Day 3 of Intro Week is literally hours of prep and cook time. Also, several recipes, in addition to the daily morning smoothie, require a scoop of a specific Rootcology protein powder which runs $80 per canister on . Obviously at this price point, it may be not feasible for many people's household budget, especially if you're a mom who is having to increase the recipe sizes to feed a big family.

On the upside, it's a beautiful book, lovely pictures, and great info on Hashimotos. Just maybe not the best solution for a busy, working, middle class family.
  • Excellent! Izabella's comprehensive book offers super easy meal plans which are easy to implement along with any diet you may be following. This book will also help you understand how to approach your symptom burden (pain, IBS, hair loss, brain fog, etc) common in people with thyroid disease through the use of healing foods that are nutritious and delicious. The recipes are delicious and the pictures are gorgeous. As a nurse-nutritionist who works exclusively with women with Hashimoto's, I am recommending this book to all my clients.
  • I have say, as a very educated and very smart author Izabella Wentz has changed my life with her findings when it comes to having an autoimmune disease that all my doctors have failed to help. So informative and simply clever. I'm still reading the book but its very nice pace in terms of a book that educations, teaches and helps you learn to be a new person again. Lovely work, there is charm, intelligence, and care put into this book.
  • I absolutely LOVE this book. Izabella does a fabulous job of explaining Hashimoto's and the principles and science that support her healing through nutrition approach. She explains the "why" behind the concepts she presents. I found the information in this book comprehensive and extremely helpful. It goes way beyond typical medical advice. As an integrative health coach and person with Hashimoto's, I know firsthand how powerful and life-changing this material is. Izabella takes a difficult subject and breaks it down into easy, manageable steps. I just started trying the healthy recipes and so far they are delicious. I am dairy and gluten-free and can eat all the recipes in this book - yay! The directions are simple and the photographs are beautiful. I can't wait to keep trying new ones. I am now recommending it to all my clients who have Hashimoto's as well as people with other autoimmune conditions.
  • I have bought numerous cookbooks over the years, paleo, mediteranean, and this and that...and based on my genetics, my food sensitivies and my thyroid health I always end up a little deflatted. But this book... finally a book for me!!!
First recipe in picture, bison meatballs, so so good.
The little notes in the book, so helpful, like random comments that fennel can be aggravating for autoimmune issues. Never knew that. I have not read the first part of the book yet, will get there soon.
  • i own dr. wentz' other two books. she can be quite an information overload when you're first feeling out knowledge on hashimoto's but she is one of the best sources as well. the first part of the book is a condensed version of what you might find in her other two books while also diving more deeply into how your diet affects your autoimmune disease. the dialogue is approachable, and the author both personal and likeable.

as far as the recipes go, i've made five at this point hot lemon water, spa water (do these count, lol!) truffled veggies, beef stew, and bibimbap bowls. all three FOOD recipes have been very successful for me, though i have to sub quite a few things due to my gut/food sensitivities. beef stew was bison stew; the meat in my bibimbap was bison meatballs as well, as i react to beef (and chicken, and fish!). i can't have garlic or onions so i leave those out as well as the avocado in the bibimbap. despite all that, everything has been a success and i just have to remind myself that i'm eating to heal right now. i hope some day soon i'll be able to reintroduce everything so i can have these recipes as they should be enjoyed. please don't hesitate to give this cookbook a try. everything is simple, straightforward, delicious, and doesn't require a ton of prep or cleanup. thank you, dr. wentz!
  • Loved.Loved ,Loved this book! So wonderful . Vibrant pictures and easy to follow recipes. The first half was also extremely helpful as it explains how to avoid the common mistakes we might make especially going Gluten free (like i was ).This book (like all of the others Dr. Wentz has written )is an absolute MUST have for anyone with Hashimoto's or does not know where to begin as far as eating healthy for your Thyroid health ,as her insights and knowledge not only as a Doctor but also as a patient is a sigh of relief in this diet crazed world .Thanks again Dr.Izabella Wentz your insight has empowered me with knowledge I can use everyday!!!
  • Very disappointed. She has written a book that isn't just for AIP, it include two other diets as well and all the recipes are mixed together. She does a two week diet plan for each, but no grocery list, so you are flipping back and forth trying to figure out what to buy to cook these recipes. The recipes are also not compiled per diet, but mixed together so again, more flipping back and forth. Completely frustrating! I can't answer for the taste of the recipes as I closed the book and put it aside.

Blockchain For Dummies For Dummies Computer/Tech 9781119555018 Computer Science Books Reviews

  • This book is sailing under false colors. It's not a book about computer algorithms or data structures. It's a how-to for people who want to use bitcoin for themselves. It doesn't explain how it works, just what to do to sign up to use it.
  • The introductory chapter does a horrible job at explaining how blockchains work. A couple of algorithm types are mentioned without giving insight as to what the general functions of the algorithms are. As a huge fan of Wiley's books for Dummies (I taught myself Calculus and Statistics via their books), I have to say that I have been severely let down by the content of this book.
  • There are many books and resources on internet on Blockchain and its applications. This book by Tiana Laurence has the right balance between readability and clear exposition and technical details. Further, it provides useful links to resources on internet and step-by-step guide to how to use many of these resources. I teach a class on Blockcahin applications to MBA students at UCLA Anderson. Will recommend this book to my students.
  • Blockchain for Dummies is a paper on blockchain for an insider who knows something about blockchain. If you do not know anything about blockchain, you will not learn anything by reading this book. The book is fairly superficial, in that it does not explain blockchain but rather it sets forth companies who are active in blockchain and what those companies are doing about blockchain. It is revealing (on page 75 of the book) that the author of the book is a co-founder of and the chief marketing officer at Factum, Inc., a developer of uses of blockchain. Thus, the author plugs blockchain without telling you much about it. For example, the author uses the term hashing and then defines it as simply "transforming data of any size into short, fixed-length values". That definition is not very useful. The author also uses technical terms like "kibibytes" and "Merkle trees" and "scalability" without much of a definition. As a result, after reading the book I was not smarter about blockchain, though I did know some of the companies that are working on blockchain.
  • Crap of a book. You can get all the information in this book by just searching blockchain and its applications in google. Dont waste your money on this.
  • Enjoyable, I recommend it
  • Blockchain for Dummies must have been rushed to market. I've never seen so many grammatical and spelling errors in a book ever. It read like an early draft of a book -- bad syntax so you have to figure out what the author is saying almost sentence by sentence. Also, it didn't give me much insight into how the blockchain works. It's more of a collection of anecdotes and facts about the blockchain.
  • Great coverage of a wide variety of solutions. Good guidance to get started.
